Neal Murphy has built himself a nice life. He has a nice home in the 'burbs, he has season tickets for all the local sports teams, he travels to both coasts frequently, and he gets invited to all the important social events. Losing his wife unexpectedly interrupted his plans and his life. Now, after a year of pouring himself into work and avoiding nosy friends and family, Neal escapes to the mountains of northern New Mexico for his annual week of volunteer work for a rustic, scenic railroad. Our past has a way of finding us, no matter how hard we try to hide. Neal is reminded of this after his chance meeting of a married woman challenges him to face the choices he has made. A wry tale of relationship endings and beginnings, End of Standard Gauge will the keep the reader entertained and guessing to the end.

I'm not saying this book is poorly written. Just nothing about it grabbed me or impelled me to finish it. If you like older railroad trains I am sure you might find it interesting. Also, if you read the sample and are drawn to it, you would probably like this book.

End of Standard Gauge edition by Andy R Ross Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I think the author wrote a romance novel for the guy. It has the macho stuff like train restoration, beer, and tools (cue Toolman, arr arr arr) but it is also about a guy going though life's challenges and looking for happiness. I lent this book to a couple female friends and they loved it as well. The twists and turn will keep you turning page after page. Hope Mr. Ross writes another novel very soon.
I read this book because my wife had it. I wasn't sure I'd get into it thinking it was all about trains, history of or something along those lines. Though there is some parts about trains, it doesn't take over the story line. I was surprised to find how wrapped in it I got. I was quite impressed, some nice surprises and great story telling. Hoping Mr. Ross can put out another one of these gems. I have a hard time finding books that keep my interest, so I'd have to recommend this one.
From the very start, this book grabbed me and wouldn't let go. A casual dinner party in Denver leads to an incredible adventure and an ending that will leave you shaking your head wondering where it came from. Lots of references for natives of Denver or New Mexico that really make the action come to life. Some may think that the book reads like a made for TV movie (sans the wise-cracking sidekick), but the informed reader will see it for what it really is, a story of a man and the real love of his life, the trains that used to criss cross this land and provide the life blood of America and the new West. Cudos to Mr. Ross on his first novel. I'm sure that anyone who has read this book will be waiting for his next project, tentatively titled "The Man in the Red Sweater"
The book title threw me off so reading it was a serendipitous experience leaving me wanting more. What happened next? An easy, enjoyable read. I hope the author has more in the works!
I found the story an interesting description of the work that draws train loving volunteers from all over the country to Chama N.M. But most importantly it is a story of love and opportunities lost. There lies its greatest message - seize the day and the opportunities that cross the path of yout life.
I'm not saying this book is poorly written. Just nothing about it grabbed me or impelled me to finish it. If you like older railroad trains I am sure you might find it interesting. Also, if you read the sample and are drawn to it, you would probably like this book.
