The Serendipity Machine A Disruptive Business Model for Society 30 Sebastian Olma Yulia Kryazheva B Joseph Pine 9789081693578 Books Reviews
The book is really content marketing for the company, but it offers a number of great insights, so it is content marketing done right and worth reading. It is very short, so if you don't like it, you only spend a couple of hours on it anyway.
Note that the ebook version is also available from the book website free of charge, although by purchasing through you get it into your Cloud reader as well.
The book tells the story of Seats2meet.com, which started in coworking in the Netherlands in 2007. Their model is somewhat different from the basic coworking model in ways that place a more significant emphasis on serendipity.
The core of their model is free workspaces for individual knowledge workers in exchange of registering their skills and interests in the booking system, and being asked to pay for their seats with social capital, helping others at the same premises with their skills and know-how and promoting the company on their social networks.
Seats2meet.com makes money from renting meeting rooms, arranging events, and renting office space for companies next to the coworking area, which gives its customers the possibility to tap into the expertise of the coworkers. Thanks to its free coworking product, it does not need much marketing or a significant sales team, as it receives free promotion on social media and the people who use the free seats also rent meeting rooms when they need them.
This is an interesting case study, and the book provides a comprehensive view to the premises on which the business model is built.
My only major gripe is that the book does not recognize that paying for the seat by helping others has financial significance in that it takes time, which has financial value (opportunity cost). If helping others takes a lot of time, this cost can be surprisingly high. Of course, the created relationships are often beneficial, so this does not undermine the whole concept, but it would have been nice if this aspect had been investigated in more detail.
nebulous in a nice gobbledy-gook kind of way . . . Point, please?
great read!
